Josh Kurtz, the founding editor of Maryland Matters, is a veteran chronicler of Maryland politics and government. He launched Maryland Matters, a nonprofit news website, in March of 2017.
Kurtz began covering the State House in 1995 for the now-defunct Gazette newspapers, and has been writing about state and local politics ever since. He was an editor at Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper, for eight years, and for eight years was the editor of E&E Daily, which covers energy and environmental policy on Capitol Hill. For 6 1/2 years Kurtz wrote a weekly column on state politics for Center Maryland and he has written for several other Maryland publications as well.
Kurtz grew up in New York City and attended public schools there. He has a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin and an MS in Journalism from Columbia University. He spent three years in an apprentice program for young journalists at The New York Times, and has worked for newspapers in New York, New Mexico and Wisconsin in addition to Maryland and D.C.
